No, is de dollahs and cents mi a deal wid. I have made a decision based on what I have to do to earn a living and support myself and my son in a tough economy. No one else is doing that for me. I am not some blond bimbo with a sugar daddy to pay the bills while I cock up mi foot all day. I work bloody hard and can't afford to miss out on even one opportunity to earn a living.

Nothing is ingrained. I have a lifetime of experience to draw on and when I refused to straighten my hair I missed out on NUFF opportunities. When you get the same feedback over and over again you have a choice, act on the feedback or continue ot misss out on opportunities.

Newsflash: I am Black, do you think the White people can't see that because I change my hairstyle. You know years about I got into a discussion with a Black American female engineer about this very issue. She had gone through the same experience and could not believe the difference in reception she got when she straightened her hair. I even remember when I first started to try and get a job in the business world. I had a longer natural then and missed out on many jobs. The feedback I got was that the long natural was "frightening and intimidating" the white folks, so I significantly trimmed it. It made a huge difference. Once I was working someplace for a long time I switched to the long braids....got great performance reviews but I was never promoted.

I fought it when it was pointed out that my braids were standing in the of picking up corporate clients. The feedback I received that was the "image" did not fit the type of client I was going after. This was unsolicited feedback from White folks and not one or two either.

Hey you've had your struggles, I've had mine. Your hairstyle is really extreme...that's a LOT of hair you got there. So, based on what I have experienced with mine, I am sure what you have been through is really tough. A close friend of our family has a son with locks nothing close to as long as what you have. He is in the music business and he has a civil service job. Not sure if they have made him permanent yet and he is no spring chicken.

The bottom line is you were working for an auto company, your Dad helped you get access to that opportunity. My folks never paved the way for me to get any job. You had a union. I have not had that kind of protection in most of the jobs I have had. I'm not sure if you had any hassles at work because of your hair....we've never discussed that. Bottom line is you are now in the music business and a DJ and there is a high tolerance for Black males with locks in your business. In the fields in which I work, opportunities for Black women are limited and I would be a fool to continue to put roadblocks in my way.

It all depends on career goals. If a Black person wants to have access to opportunities in certain fields, like it or not, there is a dress code. Violate it whether you are Black or White and it will take you longer to get a job and good luck in getting promoted. I have had this same discussion with my son who was a bit stubborn about the hair thing and had a tough time getting jobs a couple of summers. He had to work in a factory and he hated it. This year, he shaped his hair before his interview and got a great summer job.

Reminds me of some of the battles I had with my ex. You have a wife and child and you are going to talk garbage about don't want to cut or shape hair...that is for teenagers.

I would never tell another Black woman what choice she has to make. That is her choice. Yes me pon weaves but if a woman has to support herself and her child or children, she has to do what she has to do. If she can bare taking longer to find a job, not getting promoted or, for media jobs, missing out on lots of opportunities...kudos to her, I did it for years and paid my dues.

I have never seen one and even when I worked with the executives in the Caribbean and brought up the topic of hiring people with locks, they were highly resistant....and they were all Black. Banks are very conservative and there is a ton of pressure to conform.

Is that why you think I am posting. PUH-LEEZE!! I am not a fan of hair straightening. Quite the opposite. That is not why I am posting. I am posting to expose the realities that you and others seem to want to ignore that Black women still face significant discrimination when they wear their hair natural. That is reality. I did not create that reality. If I did not care I would not even bother to post about it and speak to people about it.

What is needed is what I was calling for LONG before my son was born. Black people need to bombard movie producers, casting directors, advertisers, sponsors, TV stations, etc. with phone calls, letters and emails complaining about the discrimination against Black women. Today it is easier than when I was calling for it. Do you think that if these companies had their Facebook pages and tweetstream jammed with complaints from Black people about this issue they would be stupid enough to not change. If every time a commercial came on the air with a Black woman with a weave or straight hair there was a flood of Facebook posts, tweets, and phone calls complaining about it...you bet your sweet bippy things would change. No one wants to do that though. People can't be bothered. I did it for years. I can't do it by myself. The Black community did not support me on this so I give up. Let someone else do it. I have paid my dues and when I think of all the money and all the opportunities I missed out...I could cry,

Stand strong and get no opportunities or few opportunities....did that for years. There are some improvements, Today I have seen a Winners and an AMEX commercial with Black women with natural hair and there was one for cheese last week. Clearly things are changing but they are not changing fast enough and I am not going to continue to miss out on opportunities with the time I have left.

Tuesday I am still debating whether to put on the ratty looking wig I have stuffed in a bag or go with my hair wash and wear. Trust me, I avoid meeting with people before I am booked for something. It's only when they insist that I go.

Nairobi, Kenya: Irene Myangoh, a personal assistant working at a law firm in Nairobi went to an upmarket hair salon along Kenyatta Avenue, and spent more than N5,500 on a human hair weave.
Two weeks later she started suffering from severe headache that would not go away. She would wake up with severe headache at night.
She went to a private doctor who gave her drugs for the relief of mild to moderate pain of inflammatory origin with or without fever; they would only work for a few hours and then the headache would be back worse than even before.
Desperate, she went to see a specialist who did blood tests and even a brain scan. All the tests were negative but the headache persisted, making her unable to concentrate at work and sleeping very poorly.
She went back to her doctor who decided to examine her scalp and under the beautiful weave he found worms!
The worms were burrowing into her skull and after sending the samples to the lab they found that the hair had eggs from which the worms had hatched.
The doctor told her that the hair was probably from a corpse because those worms are usually found on dead bodies. Efforts to reach her doctor for further comments were fruitless for he was said to be out of the country.
The manager of the salon where Irene got the hair product was traumatised and said they had fitted ten weaves from the package already, adding that the particular batch of hair had sold very fast; in less than a month, she had sold over 150 pieces.
“I am shocked to hear this because this is the first time such a thing is happening to my clients. I will get more information from my supplier because we import these weaves from the UK, USA and India,” says the salon manager who did not want to be mentioned.
She continued to say: “Maybe, the supplier sent us rejects from the factory or weaves that had overstayed in the stores but I promise to follow up on the matter and compensate Irene.”
Irene had to shave after this ordeal and took antibiotics for two weeks.
Dr CK Musau, a surgeon at Nairobi hospital says that he has dealt with more than ten cases of the same in a period of six months.
He further urges ladies to be very careful with what they put on their heads, and adds that it is better to appreciate natural beauty and be content with what God has blessed them instead of chasing artificial beauty.
“It is unfortunate how the West has influenced Kenyan youth; especially ladies. They should stick to their natural African beauty as opposed to trying to ape what they see,” says Musau.
Dr Musau reiterated that the youth must keep in mind that of late, Kenyans can sell anything: from body parts to human beings to used coffins and now even weaves that seem to come from corpses.
Elsewhere, 16-year-old girl from Buruburu, a Nairobi surburb, also suffered the same fate but unfortunately for her she died. Cobweb eggs were found in her hair after she died.
There was a profound cobweb design in her weaved hair. She dropped dead after constant headaches.
The root cause? The weave had unnoticed spider eggs. The warmth produced after weaving provided a very conducive environment for the eggs to hatch.
A spider grew in her scalp and bit her. The poison found its way to her blood. She could not survive the attack.
